The Manifesto

This just in from Speedy…

I am 2 weeks away from the MS 150 and I need your help!

Help me raise money for the National MS Society as I ride in the MS 150 in 2 weeks.

Every hour of every day, someone is diagnosed with MS. Almost 4 years ago I became one of those people. We can use your help and that’s why I’m asking you to support my fund raising efforts with a tax-deductible donation. No amount is too small, 5 dollars, 10 dollars, anything helps us in this battle. Last night, Rupert Murdoch launched a laughable attack against you, the media reform movement, and journalism itself.

His on-air bully Bill O’Reilly called us “crazy” and “fascist” — you, me, and the millions of others who want media reform. These people are “doing a lot of damage to America,” O’Reilly yelled. Our crime? Calling for journalism that’s more honest, just and accountable to the public.

When Bill O’Reilly goes after you, you must be doing something right. So we’ve decided to return the favor, and tell him two things: (1) Thanks so much for the compliment and (2) please stop pretending to be a journalist.

Tell Bill O’Reilly: Stop Pretending to Be a Journalist (more…)

An Associated Press poll released on Friday shows:

Barack Obama 47 percent

John McCain 43 percent

And Ralph Nader 6 percent.

And that’s Nader at six percent with virtually no mainstream national press coverage.
Why is Nader’s six percent important?

Debate Nader.Because this might be the year when the Presidential debates are busted open. (more…)

One last thing for today.

Senators Obama and McCain:

We were reading the other day about the tobacco legislation you both support that is making it’s way through Congress. The bill would give the federal government the authority to regulate tobacco. And it would ban flavored cigarettes - like strawberry and chocolate. Flavoring makes tobacco smoke more attractive - especially to young people. So, we agree - flavoring should be banned from cigarettes. Here’s the curious thing, though. Under the bill, all flavorings would be banned. Except for menthol. Thank You for Smoking. (more…)

Legendary journalist Bill Moyers electrified an audience of more than 3,500 in Minneapolis this morning calling the media reform movement “the most significant citizens’ movement to emerge in this new century.”

Watch Moyers’ speech now:

Moyers said that the work of activists like you has “challenged the stranglehold of mega-media corporations over our press” and fostered “alternative and independent sources of news and information that people can trust.”

“You’re not alone, and you know what we need to know,” he told the audience. “So it’s up to you to tell the truth about this country we love. … It’s up to you to remind us that democracy only works when ordinary people claim it as their own.”

The country is buzzing today over a tell-all book by former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan. In his explosive memoir, McClellan reveals that the Bush administration ran a “political propaganda campaign” to mislead the American public on the war in Iraq.

But he takes it one step further, implicating the mainstream media for its role in “enabling” this propaganda: “The national press corps was probably too deferential to the White House” in spreading the president’s case for the war, McClellan writes. The mainstream media didn’t live up to its watchdog reputation. “If it had, the country would have been better served.”

This should be a shock to everyone. The president’s own spokesman lays a large share of the blame for Bush’s pro-war propaganda on the media’s “deferential” treatment of White House spin.

Please become part of a growing people-powered campaign to investigate this scandal and make media more accountable to the public:

The time has arrived for me to raise some money. Of course I need your help. As you know I’m riding the Tour de Cure fixed to raise money for Diabetes. The tour is coming in quick and fast and I don’t have much longer, but I have to raise $150. I don’t expect any one of you to donate all the money but it would be nice to see some donations of any amount. As is cliché, every little bit helps.

So DONATE.

Many of the young people who came to work for Ralph Nader in the 1960s and 1970s - the Nader’s Raiders of our youth - went on to do great things.

One of those early shining stars was Robert Fellmeth.

After writing books and reports as a Nader’s Raider, Fellmeth went on to found the Children’s Advocacy Institute at the University of San Diego Law School.

Last month, the Institute released an eye-opening report titled “State Secrecy and Child Deaths in the United States.”

The report finds that abused children are dying under a shroud of state secrecy.

It ranks all 50 states from A to F - and ten states get an F. (more…)

The media still refuse to cover the outrageous Pentagon propaganda scandal. We need your help to place this ad in Washington news outlets by Friday so we can force all 535 members of Congress, their staff and other D.C. influentials to hear this message:

We won’t let the Pentagon — and its Big Media enablers — get away with manipulating and deceiving the public. (more…)
