If you feel that pigs with lipstick and Paris Hilton have hijacked our political debate this election season, you’re not alone.

This Friday, you can help get the media back on track when PBS’s Jim Lehrer hosts the first presidential debate. We need 3,000 people to use our online tool to instantly rate how well the media moderates and reports on the debates.

Yes, the day has arrived and the hour is nearing when I will once again be tortured by all things shiny, aluminum and carbon. I will have to sit through hours of sales meetings with representatives telling me that not only is this the best damn thing ever invented but it is a huge improvement over last year’s model, even though the only thing they changed was the color. I will once again see the same things I saw the first time I attended this godawful show some 11 years ago.

It’s a tough job, but somebody, namely me, has to do it.

This was sent in to the Alliance by a local advocate Jaynan Chancelor.

Salt Lake City is inviting cyclists into the middle of traffic lanes on a busy downtown block.
The city opened its first signed and painted shared-use lanes this week on 200 South near the Gallivan Center Plaza between State and Main streets - a section with no room for roadside bike passages.
A 4-foot-wide bar down the middle of the outer traffic lanes alert motorists and cyclists alike that something is different, and roadside signs tell them to share the lanes for that block. It’s a block that sees a lot of two-wheel traffic because of the dedicated bike lanes that lead to and from it on wider blocks of 200 South. (more…)

KB, my fiance, works at a Title One school in St. George that has a dual-immersion program. Due to certain prejudices, her school gets a lot of shit. As a person that is bi-lingual and had to learn later in life, I would have been stoked to have the opportunity to learn Spanish when I was in elementary. The world doesn’t speak just English. Learning a second language opens up an entire continent and one of the most culturally rich civilizations in Europe to these kids. Any one who thinks that is a bad idea needs to pull their head out, or stop being afraid of what is different.

An article about her school with derogatory comments can be found here.

Peace. Love. and Revolution.

This is one of many possible variations that can be done with the Old Ephraim’s Cutoff. This particular variation goes up the cutoff which is quite steep and requires a bit of hike-a-biking. Following the maps in the same area it is possible to come back down the trail.

To get to the trailhead go to Right Hand Fork in Logan Canyon by taking the turn at Camp Lomia. Once on this road follow the fork to your left going to the circular parking lot with the bathroom described in the other trails. Park Here.

Head up the singletrack located by the stream and take the left at the fork going up Willow Creek. At 2.35 miles you will see a section of singletrack on your right, there is a sign for Ephraim’s Cutoff about 15 feet off the trail. Take this trail up to the dirt road and head right towards the grave sight. From here go ahead and continue to the Steel trail and come back down to your car.

There is 3320 feet of climbing in 12.2 miles.

Cyclist nearly killed in crash

In a letter to Congress on July 23, 2008, Ralph Nader warned that the federal government’s bank insurance fund may be insufficient to handle the developing crisis in the banking industry.

The day after Ralph sent out his warning, he was ridiculed in Congress.

One member, Spencer Bachus, at a Congressional hearing, mentioned Ralph’s letter and said point blank “Our banks are well capitalized, our deposit insurance fund is sound. There’s absolutely no factual basis for saying that there’s not money there to pay.” (more…)

I’ve held for years that heels make a woman (or a man if the situation fits) look cheap and easy. I have yet to see a pair of heels or a woman wearing heals that didn’t look rediculous. Even the professionals who, in their skirts and heels, go tramping around with their colleagues, look to me as if they are trying to fit in to an idealistic image.  All in all, I find heels demeaning to women.
